Manufacturing — Core format
HPMC capsule manufacturing, matched to your formula.
HPMC capsules are the standard vegetarian hard capsule for powder-based supplements. We place your capsule product with the specialist European manufacturing partner whose equipment, batch sizes and documentation fit the formula — and coordinate it through to batch release.
The format
A plant-based shell. The fill decides the rest.
HPMC (hydroxypropyl methylcellulose) is a plant-derived alternative to gelatine for two-piece hard capsules. It suits vegetarian and vegan positioning and is the format many brands start with for botanicals, vitamins, minerals and functional blends.
The shell is rarely the difficult part. What decides a good capsule product is the fill: how the powder flows, its bulk density, the dose per serving and how sensitive the actives are to moisture. Those properties set the capsule size, the number of capsules per serving, the excipients and — ultimately — which hard capsule manufacturer is the right fit.

When it fits
When brands choose HPMC capsules.
Capsules are a practical default for many supplement concepts. HPMC specifically is chosen when positioning or formulation calls for it.
- Vegetarian or vegan positioning
- A plant-based shell keeps the finished product consistent with a vegetarian or vegan claim, subject to the full formula qualifying.
- Doses that fit a capsule
- Actives that reach the target dose in a small number of capsules per serving, without needing tablet compression.
- Taste-neutral delivery
- Bitter or strongly flavoured botanicals are enclosed rather than flavoured, avoiding the development work a powder would need.
- Simple formulas, fast development
- Many capsule formulas need fewer excipients than a tablet, which can shorten development for straightforward blends.
Product examples
Products commonly made as HPMC capsules.
Product examples are indicative. Suitability is confirmed per formula with the selected partner.
- 01
Magnesium capsules
Bulky mineral forms need care with dose per capsule and capsules per serving — the salt chosen changes both.
- 02
Vitamin and mineral capsules
Single vitamins, multi-nutrient blends and combinations where low-dose actives must be evenly distributed.
- 03
Botanical extract capsules
Extracts specified by identity and composition, where moisture control and flow aids may matter.
- 04
Adaptogen and functional blends
Multi-ingredient formulas balancing several actives against the volume a capsule can hold.

Probiotic capsules may also be possible, but suitability depends on the strains, moisture and storage requirements and on a partner equipped for them — assessed per project. Probiotic supplement manufacturing
Capsule specification
What goes into a capsule specification.
Each element of the capsule is a decision. Together they form the specification every manufacturer quotes against.
- AShell material
- HPMC for vegetarian positioning; gelatine where preferred.
- BCapsule size
- Chosen from fill volume and dose — confirmed with the partner.
- CFill
- Actives plus any excipients needed for flow and accurate dosing.
- DClosure
- Cap and body lock; colour and opacity as part of the brand spec.
Technical considerations
Formulation and fill considerations.
These are resolved before a capsule manufacturer is asked to quote — so quotes are comparable and the first batch runs as planned.
Flow
Poorly flowing powders fill unevenly. Flow aids or granulation may be needed, which changes the excipient list and the label.
Bulk density
Low-density powders need more volume per dose: a larger capsule or more capsules per serving, both of which affect cost and consumer experience.
Dose per serving
The target dose against the capsule volume defines capsules per serving — often the first commercial trade-off in a capsule product.
Excipients
Fillers and flow agents improve production but count against clean-label goals. We weigh both with you.
Moisture sensitivity
Hygroscopic extracts and sensitive actives influence shell choice, production environment and packaging barrier.
Partner-dependent variables
MOQ, batch size and lead time.
These depend on the selected partner and on the product. We do not quote generic numbers — we explain what drives them and compare real quotes.
- 01
Minimum order quantity
Set by the partner's batch size, the capsule size and the packaging line. Lower minimums are often possible at a higher unit cost.
- 02
Batch size
Driven by blending capacity and fill weight. Matching the batch to your forecast avoids overstock and short-dated goods.
- 03
Lead time
Depends on raw-material availability, shell supply, production slots and testing — planned together, not separately.
- 04
Unit cost
Shaped by formula cost, capsules per serving, batch size and packaging format, compared like for like across partners.
Packaging
Bottles, jars, pouches or blisters.
Capsules can be packed in bottles, jars, stand-up pouches or blisters. Blisters protect each dose individually and suit moisture-sensitive formulas; bottles and pouches suit larger counts and e-commerce.
Pack format, desiccant needs and closure are specified with the product, so the packaging line and the filling partner match.
Quality & documentation
Specification, documentation and release.
Each project works from a written product specification: actives, excipients, fill weight, capsule type and finished-product limits. Raw-material documentation and certificates of analysis are reviewed before production, and the batch is released against the agreed specification.
Quality systems and certifications are those held by the relevant manufacturing partner. We check that they match the product and target market before a partner is selected.
Quality framework
Standards represented across our manufacturing partners.
We work with certified specialist manufacturing partners and prioritise partners operating under relevant quality and food-safety standards. Certifications are held by the respective partners; applicability is confirmed for each product and manufacturing route.

Manufacturer selection
Choosing the right capsule manufacturer.
A good HPMC capsule manufacturer for one product can be the wrong one for the next. We compare on:
- 01
Fill technology
Equipment suited to your powder, fill weight and capsule size.
- 02
Batch fit
Batch sizes that match launch volumes and expected growth.
- 03
Documentation
Quality system, certifications and paperwork appropriate for your market.
- 04
Packing options
In-house bottling or blistering, or a coordinated packing partner.
- 05
Commercial terms
MOQ, unit cost and lead time compared on the same specification.
- 06
Continuity
Capacity and supply stability for repeat orders and scale-up.
Product route
Custom formulation or an existing formula.
Custom formulation
Your own formula, developed or refined for capsule production: actives, dose, excipients and specification defined before manufacturing is placed.
Existing or partner formula
Where a suitable partner formula exists, it can shorten time to market. Availability depends on the partner and the product category and is confirmed per project.
Manufacturing route
From brief to released batch.
- Step 01

The AVENTRO role
How we place your capsule product.
AVENTRO is not tied to a single production facility. We define the specification with you, shortlist specialist partners from our European network, compare them on technical and commercial fit, and remain your point of contact from technical transfer to released batch.
